D. Sonic Layer (Sound-Level Craft)

How synthetic sound sustains — or quietly destroys — cinematic realism.

In physical cinema, sound was coherence the filmmaker inherited. A microphone on set received a world that was already acoustically whole: the voice matched the body, the room matched the architecture, the footstep matched the floor. The maker of synthetic cinema inherits none of this. Generative audio, like generative image, produces material by statistical pattern — without physics, memory, or intent. Sonic coherence must therefore be consciously assembled, exactly as the visual strata are: defined before generation, evaluated after it, corrected when it drifts.

The stakes are higher than they seem, because audiences rarely audit sound consciously. A viewer forgives a mildly uncanny face; they do not forgive a voice that changes timbre between shots, or a room that sounds nothing like the room they are looking at. Sonic incoherence registers as wrongness before it registers as sound — a pre-rational flinch, like the morphing hand.

One caution governs everything below. Sonic realism is coherence, not smoothness. A clean, evenly mixed soundtrack can be sonically bankrupt if its spaces have no signature and its causes have no consequences; a rough, distorted soundscape can be fully coherent if its roughness is consistent and declared. The discipline here is the same discipline that governs grain and glitch in the image: imperfection held with intention is texture; imperfection that drifts is collapse.

1. Sonic Intent

One sentence describing what the film sounds like and why — the audio counterpart of the thematic spine. “The world is louder than the people in it.” Every sonic choice must reinforce it.

1.2 Silence Policy

Define where silence is permitted, what it means, and what fills the frame when nothing speaks. Undefined silence reads as accidental dead air; defined silence is one of the strongest authorial instruments the medium has.

1.3 Sonic Genre Grammar

  • dynamic range — the distance between the quietest and loudest moments the film permits (compressed, wide, volatile)

2. Voice and Dialogue

  • pace and rhythm

Voice identity is the sonic counterpart of character continuity — and it drifts across generations exactly the way faces do.

2.2 Performance Prosody

Prosody is the music of speech — the rhythm, stress, and melody riding on top of the words. Specify:

  • breath placement
  • hesitation and repair — the false starts and mid-sentence corrections of real talk
  • overlap and interruption
  • emotional dynamic range — how far delivery is allowed to swing between murmur and outburst

Synthetic voice fails at the level of rhythm long before it fails at the level of tone.

2.3 Dialogue–Image Sync

Define:

  • phoneme-alignment tolerance — how precisely lip movement must match each speech sound
  • off-screen dialogue rules

3. Ambience and Acoustic Space

3.1 Acoustic Signature

Every space has an acoustic signature — the particular way it reflects sound back, shaped by its size, shape, and materials. Derive each signature from the architecture defined in the Environmental Stratum. Concrete rings, wood warms, fabric deadens; these are audible facts. A room that looks small and sounds cathedral-sized is an environmental failure delivered through the ears.

3.2 Spatial Positioning

Define:

  • distance behavior — how sound softens and loses detail as its source recedes
  • occlusion logic — how walls, doors, and bodies muffle the sound that passes through them
  • off-screen presence

A sound source behind a closed door must be filtered like one.

Weather, water, fire, and particle behavior must obey the same world rules that govern their visual counterparts. If the world’s physics are authored, its acoustics are too.

4.1 Score Philosophy

Define:

  • diegetic versus non-diegetic logic — which music exists inside the world, where characters can hear it, and which exists only for the audience
  • instrumentation and cultural sourcing
  • how score relates to the sonic spine and the thematic spine

4.2 Emotional Function

Decide once whether music supports the image or counterpoints it — reinforcing what the frame shows, or playing against it — then apply the decision consistently.

4.3 Music Continuity

Maintain:

  • motif recurrence — the return of a musical phrase tied to a character, place, or idea
  • key and tempo relationships across sequences
  • transition logic

5. Sound–Image Continuity

5.1 Temporal Sync

Sound and image must agree on when things happen.

5.2 Consequence Sync

Every visible impact requires an audible consequence. Consequence silence — visible action that produces no sound — is the fastest realism collapse in synthetic cinema.

5.3 Perspective Sync

When the camera cuts wide, the sound recedes. Sonic perspective must track lens language.

How filmmakers actually produce synthetic cinema using AICR.

This section is the beating heart of the manual. It translates the authorial, perceptual, and environmental strata into a repeatable, cinematic production workflow — not “prompting,” not “trial and error,” but a disciplined generative craft.

Synthetic cinema succeeds when generation is treated like filmmaking, not like image sampling.

But the bibles are written for a human collaborator, and the model reads none of them. Every constraint must cross from authorial document into a form the model can register — and that crossing is lossy. AICR recognizes three translation modes:

  • Text-legible constraints survive as prompt language and mostly hold. Lens language, exposure logic, weather behavior, genre grammar, sonic density — these compress into words the model can act on.
  • Reference-legible constraints cannot survive as words alone. Character identity, facial structure, voice identity, a specific building — no sentence pins these down. They transmit through conditioning: reference images, first frames, seeds, voice samples.
  • Enforcement-only constraints cannot be transmitted at all. The thematic spine, narrative arc, emotional rhythm, thematic resolution — no model registers these in any form. They are enforced after generation, in evaluation and postproduction weaving.

This is why the generative loop exists. If translation were lossless, you would generate once and be done. The loop is the discipline that recovers what translation loses.

3.5 Untranslatable Constraints

When a constraint is enforcement-only, do not keep rewriting the prompt — the failure is not in your wording. Instead:

  • move the constraint downstream to evaluation and postproduction weaving
  • translate its symptoms rather than the constraint itself (a thematic spine cannot be prompted, but its recurring objects, palettes, and spaces can)
  • budget regeneration for it — untranslatable constraints consume the most loop cycles

Knowing which mode a constraint belongs to is itself a production skill. Misclassifying an enforcement-only constraint as text-legible is the single largest source of wasted generation.
